I knew there had to be a path to healing. But I couldn’t find it on WebMD. (That didn’t stop me from trying, at 3 AM, of course.)
I had lost 150+ pounds and kept it off for over 20 years (all without surgery or pills). I was a weight loss “expert” who helped other awakening women find their flow with food and take their true shape — all through compassionate awareness and self-trust.
I knew it wasn’t just a physical problem. After all, losing those 150+ pounds didn’t just take the “right diet,” it took a whole-self healing plan including every level of my being: beliefs, emotions, relationships, shadow work, spirituality, and more.
If I knew all of this, why had I suddenly gained 30+ pounds? Why was I so tired, I couldn’t get off the couch? Why couldn’t I fall asleep or find the right words?
I eventually solved this puzzle. (With help from some of the people you’re about to meet.) And the process has been one of the greatest awakenings of my life.
Turns out? I had actually been resistant to healing and didn’t even realize it.
These mysterious patterns were hard to unravel because they were unconscious — hidden on a deeper level than I’d ever dealt with. Hard-wired into my nervous system.
My body had really good reasons for keeping me a little sick and overweight. At least, they were great reasons when they started. Now, they were old, outworn coping mechanisms. In order to release them, I had to face and heal some old, old trauma
The telltale sign of trauma I had (back when I couldn’t lose those 30 pounds or get off the couch) was a blindspot. Even with a PhD in transpersonal psychology, even knowing that weight and health issues were never just physical, I became hyper-focused on healing Lyme, clearing mold and digestive issues, and resolving my re-activated Epstein-Barr.
Of course healing these physical issues was crucial. And thankfully, my doctor was amazing. But as I played that symptom whack-a-mole, I slowly began to wonder: what’s really making me so sick?
There’s always a way to work with life’s challenges so they open up.
Sometimes, we encounter challenges that evoke a whole ‘nother layer of resistance, though. Then? We need a fresh set of keys to open the door.
Life telling me: zoom out. Look at the other pieces. Explore the resistance. Embrace your whole self. Embody a whole new level of gentleness toward yourself.
For me to truly heal and permanently transform, I needed to face some old trauma. Stuff that “shouldn’t still be bothering me.” You know, tiny little details of my life like being adopted and bouncing from one foster home to the next before I could walk, let alone make sense of it all.
But trauma doesn’t have to be that dramatic. It can be your protector being the person you need protecting from. Or looking for love and connection from people who don’t have them to spare.
Trauma is an old blueprint on the soul.
We don’t like to think about it, but we’re vulnerable creatures. We get impacted and imprinted by life. By old things, childhood things, and adult things, too. Simple things. Not-so-dramatic but really important things. (Especially to highly sensitive people, nervous systems, and souls.)
For me, this old blueprint had created a constellation of mysterious symptoms, mental-emotional patterns, and behaviors. When I got to the deep roots of it all, those contractions loosened and dissolved…and I relaxed even more into my true shape.
When you loosen those old patterns, taking your true shape is natural. Relaxing. Pleasurable. Like finally coming home.
Then, instead of numbing out with German chocolate cake, you can feel the sadness beneath the craving, soothe it in more pleasurable ways…and watch that pattern that had you in its grip relax, soften, and become transparent. (This frees up so much energy for living a life of purpose and joy!)
With gentleness and compassionate curiosity, you can transform those painful patterns into portals…to your true self.

I know: “trauma” is a dramatic word. It makes us think of shell-shocked soldiers and victims of extreme abuse. But the latest research shows: trauma is far more common (and less dramatic) than we thought.
When it remains unresolved, it gets stuck in our bodies…and we try to cope in lots of different, unhelpful ways. That’s why it can look like any number of things — in your body and behavior:

Dead end method #1: Willpower / mind over matter / lifehacking.
You find the perfect diet, throw out the bad food, and resolve to start on Monday, no matter what. Rigidity is the superego’s unworkable solution. It never works because it denies the deeper patterns and desires clamoring for your attention. What you really need is something that honors the deeper, emotional parts of you, too.
Dead end method #2: Law of Attraction / affirmations / pseudospirituality
You might feel nice for a minute, but unless you address the root of the problem, this is like putting pretty paint over rotting wood. You must get to the foundation of your patterns and rebuild. Plus, you need real-world, feet-on-the-ground practices to implement your insights.
Dead end method #3: Rescuing other people
Maybe you try to distract yourself from your problems by focusing on other people’s drama and needs. Or you overwork yourself to outrun your nagging longing. Ultimately, you will never satisfy that deeper heart/soul longing until you recognize it and feed it, directly.
Dead end method #4: Flipping the bird to authority and structure
You want to feel free and liberated — so you decide to let your inner rebel flag fly. You do what you want, eat what you want, screw that healing regimen! Even the most loving, healing structure can bring up vulnerability for some people. The real work is finding a way to un-shackle yourself from constraints and stay devoted to your best interests.

...sweat, and curse my excess flesh. I worried about fitting - not just into clothes but chairs, crowded cars, and airplane seats. I wondered how I could understand so much about myself … except why I couldn't lose that weight for good. But that feels like another lifetime.
Twenty years ago, I lost 150 pounds without surgery or drugs. This came after a lifetime of emotional eating, shame, heartbreak, and (I now know) trauma.
How’d I do it? I made a loving vow to understand the truth about my issues with food and weight. No matter what.
This intention took me far beyond fixing myself with diet and exercise. It led me to the depths of my false self and the farthest reaches of my potential. It confronted the comfortable, habitual ways I made up for early losses of safety and connection (trauma). And it unlocked a sense of freedom and flow I’d never experienced, before.
Imagine my surprise when 15 years later I hit another confounding body challenge - chronic illness made up of Lyme Disease, mold illness, reactivated Epstein-Barr Virus, and more. This round was no less confronting. However, I had more confidence I would get to the roots and heal because of what I'd already learned about how the body supports our awakening.
Along with my personal heroine's journey, I draw upon several decades of eclectic training, including:

In 2008 while hiking through the jungle in Ecuador, Danielle was bit by 20+ ticks. This was truly a life-changing hike. A few days later, Danielle became very ill, and after losing consciousness several times, she was taken to the emergency room and treated for dehydration. For the next several years she experienced one bizarre symptom after another. After 6 years and several other diagnoses, Danielle was finally tested and told that she had lyme disease. She has made drastic lifestyle changes, experimented with several treatments, and is now about 80-90% recovered. Through this experience she transformed into a successful healer and a better human being. Her view of life has shifted and her experiences are richer. She now has a deeper appreciation of her body, opportunities to learn and grow, her family and friends, and rest.
Danielle has a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Food Science, and has a diverse background in the field of nutrition. She developed three doctorate level functional medicine classes for Huntington College of Health Sciences. She has co-authored three books and several magazine and journal articles. After becoming very ill herself, she began studying Functional Medicine extensively. Danielle is now specializing in functional, preventative medicine, health coaching, and medical cannabis consulting. She works at California Center for Functional Medicine and also sees private patients through her virtual practice.

Q: Is this just about weight loss?
A: That will be a large part of our focus, but the work goes far beyond that. This program is about the relationship between trauma, your body, food, and your true self. And it’s applicable to many different situations and scenarios, not just overweight.
Q: Will I lose weight by the end?
A: Look: I can help anyone lose 30 pounds in 30 days — that’s not hard. What’s hard — and really important — is making weight loss permanent. If you’ve ever gained weight again after a diet, you know: that takes facing some deeper issues, which might seem unresolvable or downright mysterious, right now.
If you’re holding extra weight because, on some level, it makes you feel safe, losing weight without addressing that deeper safety issue won’t just be temporary — it’ll be downright unkind to yourself (and maybe even re-traumatizing).
This program will support you in attuning to what YOUR optimal next steps are. So you can attune to them. You’ll learn an optimizing process you’ll have for the rest of your life.
I never know if someone will lose weight or not, by the end of one of these programs. But I can guarantee that you’ll finish this program feeling more compassionate toward yourself, less judgmental, and aware of what you really need to do to thrive and take great care of yourself (not just in theory — in practice).

Q: Do I need to be a certain religion or spiritual orientation?
A: Nope! Whether you’re Christian, Hindu, atheist, or “spiritual-but-not-religious,” you’re welcome here. Because we’ll focus on your own insight process, no deity will be needed (or get in the way).
Q: What if I’m a physician, therapist, or healer?
A: If you’re a physician, psychotherapist, nutritionist, personal trainer, nurse, etc. and are referring clients to the program, you have the option of registering anonymously and being grouped with other professionals. Please email me directly and we’ll arrange this for you. I will need to know your true identity for the safety of our community, but it will remain confidential with me and you can participate fully under the pseudonym of your choice.
Q: I’m not overweight — I’m underweight and struggling. Can I sign up?
A: Yes, please do. Being overweight is more common in our culture, but there can be just as much suffering on the underweight side of things. Malnourishment and an insatiable hunger (for food, sleep, drugs, sex, etc.) can also be related to trauma — and will be supported by this program.
Q: I’m a man and want to sign up. Is this just for women?
A: It’s rare that men join these programs, but when they do, they’re awesome. I always get permission from the women in small group.
Q: I’m busy! How much time will this take?
A: Like most things, more time you invest, the more you’ll get out of it. That said, your time investment can range greatly, from two hours per week on up. Daily practices can be done in as little as 15 minutes per day.
Q: Will I be enlightened by the end?
A: Awakening isn’t an event, it’s a process. You will most definitely become familiar with pieces and step of that process, which you can bring forward for the rest of your life.
Q: What if my husband/wife/daughter/mother won’t support me?
A: You’ll get a sample letter you can adapt and share (in written form or in conversation) with those close to you. May people are delightfully astounded by how supportive people are when asked in this way! But you’ll also learn how to tell who NOT to ask for support (asking the wrong people can be part of a self-defeating pattern).
Q: I’m exhausted and can barely take care of myself. Will I still benefit from this program?
A: I get it! When I was ravaged by chronic Lyme disease and mold exposure, it might take me twenty minutes to write a check. Brain fog and exhaustion are real — and no fun. If you’re in this situation, please know:
— I feel for you. I truly get it.
— You are still welcome here — and in fact, this might be the thing that turns everything around for you.
— You might not be able to do everysinglething in this program. That’s OK. We’ll be compassionate with your situation and meet you where you are.
